This is an excellent question and I often ask myself this. In America, Black Americans are perhaps the most religious group. I think Christianity is another cripple of the black community. It keeps us even more closed minded than we are without it. Christianity to a Black American is a slave religion and it keeps our minds/thoughts enslaved and closed. It's like the white man still has power of us. Is this why we pray to this blond hair, blue eyed Jesus? Oh and Islam is also a slave religion. Well, to put it simply all religions are slave religions.

There were laws of protection for slaves. Handlers, be they foremen or owners caught abusing a slave ie: whipping them without due or just cause, could have them dangling at the end of a rope. A "good" slave owner would not sell the guyren or the spouse of a slave. An angry or mournful slave is not going to be nearly as productive as a "Happy" slave. A more wealthy slave owner might even be known to give his slave a small amount of cash so they could purchase things for themselves while in town on business. Slaves were often encouraged to attend church on Sundays. Understand also that by the mid 1800s, most slaves were born in captivity and knew no other life. Yes, they saw the difference between their existence and that of their masters, but it's much like being born in poverty today and seeing the rich folks drive by. The poorer slave owners were often times noted for working in the fields right along side their slaves. Generally, when a slave became too old or laim to work, they were allowed to live out their days on the property. While the life of a slave was not "easy" nor right, it was far from what most people believe today as factual.
